The Edgar de Picciotto International Prize was created by the Graduate Institute as a tribute to Edgar de Picciotto, the founder of Union Bancaire Privée (UBP), and his family. His generosity enabled the Edgar and Danièle de Picciotto Student House to be built in Geneva, for housing students from all over the world.

Joan Wallach Scott, Professor Emerita at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, is recognised worldwide for her theories and many books on gender. At the award ceremony at the Graduate Institute, she gave a talk on the topic, “Gender equality: why is it so difficult to achieve?”

The Edgar de Picciotto International Prize, a sum of CHF 100,000, is awarded every two years. It goes to internationally renowned academics who have contributed through their research to a better understanding for the world’s great challenges and whose work has influenced policy-makers.

Previous laureates have been Amartya Sen (Nobel Prize for Economics, 1998), Saul Friedländer (Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction, 2008), and Paul Krugman (Nobel Prize for Economics, 2008).
