Alternative investments

Alternative investments

Beyond hedge funds, alternative investments also include instruments such as commodities, private equity and real estate. In essence, anything that falls outside of the three traditional asset classes of equities, fixed income, and cash equivalents is an alternative investment. Compared to traditional assets, alternative investments are more complex, less regulated and often less liquid. Thus, alternative investors tend to be institutional or sophisticated high-net-worth individuals who have a higher risk tolerance and larger portfolios.

In the case of hedge funds, one can invest in single-manager hedge funds, funds of hedge funds or customised hedge fund mandates. Because return expectations are higher than those on traditional assets, hedge fund managers often charge higher fees.
