This word is borrowed from Swedish and means a person who has been appointed by a government agency or company to fairly investigate and deal with problems and complaints. For example, the Swiss Banking Ombudsman, ‘[…] deals with specific complaints which are raised against banks based in Switzerland. The Banking Ombudsman is independent and neutral [and] he treats inquiries strictly confidential.’ (From the Swiss Banking Ombudsman website.)
