About The KnowledgeBase
Saturday & Summer Academies
Introduction
Like its predecessor
The Summer Academy (hosted each Summer at
Georgia Tech since 1998),
The KnowledgeBase Saturday Academy
enhances participants'
reading, writing, math, leadership,
entrepreneurship, and
critical thinking skills in "edutaining"
(educating + entertaining)
ways.
These ends are accomplished
through means like computer
repair & refurbishing,
Web site & graphic design, the Internet,
music & video production,
and poetry.
These means form the
core of our project-based peer learning
approach that incorporates
interactive problem solving,
skill-enhancing classes,
technology demonstrations, and
concept-reinforcing
games.
2002-03 Projects
The 2002-03
KnowledgeBase Saturday Academy will allow students
to complete projects
that:
1. Repair,
refurbish for, and redistribute computers
to
families, small businesses, and mission-driven
organizations.
2. Build and maintain
Web sites for small businesses
and
mission-driven organizations.
3. Perform Internet-based
research tasks for small
businesses
and mission-driven organizations.
4. Produce documentaries
and short films that show
ordinary
people doing extraordinary things.
5. Produce original
music and poetry that educates
and
empowers using the language of our youth.
2002 KnowledgeBase Summer Academy
To prepare for
these projects, KnowledgeBase Saturday Academy
students will participate
in activities similar to those
conducted during the
2002 KnowledgeBase Summer Academy:
Internet Scavenger
Hunt
-----------------------
The Scavenger Hunt activity
is a computer-based competition
that demonstrates the
Internet's power and utility as a
research tool by having
students use it to find answers to
a series of questions.
It also stresses the importance of
carefully reading to
successfully navigate a Web site.

Students experienced
"Over the Line: The Art and
Life of Jacob Lawrence",
which showcased nearly 200
works by this leading
American modernist and the first
20th-century African-American
artist to achieve national
recognition.
Build Your Own Web Site
-----------------------
Students constructed
Web sites that focused on their
personal interests and
life goals. The sites include
their personal biographies
and statements of purpose.
Build Your Own Computer
-----------------------
Students refurbished
a computer that they took home
at the end of the Summer
Academy.

HISTORhYmes
-----------
HISTORhYmes is a literacy,
composition and poetical
expression activity
that combines reading comprehension,
grammar, and the creative
imaginations of young people
to study historical
and contemporary figures. Students
performed their HISTORhYmes
for a studio audience of
their peers and our
volunteers.
